Edition number 29 in this Digital Markets Blog presidential campaign 2008 series on what I am calling “User Generated Politics”

Ning is proving a very unsocial place for John Edwards.

The 60 second Ning John Edwards “Social Network” set-up by the Edwards campaign looks like it is a 60 second Social Network (see "Web 2.0 one minute Social Network: Does size matter?").

The Ning turnkey Social Network template is cheery and colorful, but overwhelmingly dominated by Ning self-promos:

NING: CREATE YOUR OWN SOCIAL WEBSITES

WHY NOT SIGN UP TO CREATE AND SHARE YOUR OWN SOCIAL WEBSITES?

THE WAY OF NING, #17 WE LOVE BEGINNINGS

Nothing can be discovered at the John Edwards lonely Ning Social Network of one, however, because nothing has been created. Additionally, the Ning default social networker profile template results in a not very social networking friendly presentation:

Real Name: John Edwards
Screen Name: johnedwards
Gender: Man
Age: 53
Country: United States
Profile: Former Senator. Director of the Center on Povery, Work and Opportunity. President in 2008

John Edwards “President in 2008,” as of March 2007?

Why is Edwards failing to network socially at Ning? At MySpace, Edwards boasts more than 12,000 friends, or “pals,” as he prefers to call them (see "Obama trouncing Clinton in MySpace race").

The Edwards non-social networking at Ning results from both a lack of user traction of Ning and a lack of effort from the Edwards campaign.

I dissected Edwards’ dismal “User Generated Politics” track record several weeks ago: “John Edwards NOT Social Networking for ‘User Generated Politics’ campaign 2008”:

John Edwards is "Social Networking" like a true politician, he is covering all his bases and promising action. But what is his actual Social Networking record?

John Edwards has NO friends at bebo, ZERO friends at TagWorld, NO friends at VSocial…At Revver and Meatcafe he has merely set-up empty profile pages and left them empty…John Edwards has no ideology or resolves at essembly…

Why does the Edwards campaign spend literally 60 seconds at virtually every social networking Website to fill-out generic templates on behalf of John Edwards, never to return?

The Edwards campaign actively promos Edward’s presence at dozens of social networking sites, soliciting “Connect” with John Edwards ’08, but does nothing to encourage connection at the majority of sites it promos.

Will Edwards discover he must work hard not only to get out the vote, but to get out the social networker as well?
