Business social network LinkedIn now claims 20 million members in the UK, which means that over half of the UK's workforce has a profile on the site.

The company's UK userbase has grown by almost 17 million since 2009, and it added another two million profiles in the last year (to put that in context, Facebook has somewhere around 35 million users in the UK).

BT, HSBC, Lloyds Banking Group, the NHS, the Royal Bank of Scotland, and Tesco are the biggest employers based on the number of members who say they work there. More than 1.2 million members of the business networking site changed employers in 2015.

LinkedIn said the most represented industries on the site in the UK include IT and services (664,000 profiles), construction (630,000), healthcare (600,000), retail (566,000), and financial services (540,000).

In the UK the site also boasts 597 magicians, 212 wizards, 814 poets, and 217 opera singers -- but only 81 rocket scientists.

The top five most searched for skills by recruiters on LinkedIn are:

  • Sales
  • Marketing
  • Java
  • Recruitment
  • HR

LinkedIn hits the milestone as one of the UK's social networking pioneers Friends Reunited announces that is it to shut down.
