Microsoft rolls out Education Competency Wheel

Best practices tool is part of Philadelphia-based School of the Future, debuting in September.

As Microsoft is gearing up to open its high-tech School of the Future in Philadelphia, which plans a grand opening Sept. 7, 2006, the school is making an innovative human resource tool is being made available for free on its website, reports eSchool News.

The Education Competency Wheel, is designed to aid schools in the hiring of personnel by identifying the talents of potential employees. The Education Competency wheel is the first of a best practices-type solution program currently being implemented in the schools.

The hub of the wheel consists of six core skill-sets and personality characteristics—such as Individual Excellence, Organizational Skills, Courage, Results, Strategic Skills, and Operating Skills. The spokes of the wheel extend to other competency areas. The competency wheel also provides other resources, including sample interview questions.

"[The Education Competency Wheel] creates an outline that allows you to be really reflective from a skill-set perspective...about where you need to go," said Cullinane, a former teacher.
