Microsoft has made the first of its planned regular updates to its Visual Studio 2013 tool suite available as of January 20.

As the Softies noted previously, Update 1 for Visual Studio 2013 is more of a minor, than a major, update. Update 1 is primarily focused on getting Visual Studio 2013 to work better with versions of Internet Explorer prior to IE10, according to a blog post by Microsoft Technical Fellow Brian Harry. Update 1 also doesn't include any updates or fixes to the Visual Studio Team Foundation Service, Harry noted.

Update 2, which is "very close behind" Update 1, Harry said, will include TFS updates. From his blog post:

"We're just wrapping up feature work on Update 2 this week and will soon be releasing our first CTP (Community Technology Preview). We’re just beginning the process of polishing, bug fixing, etc. to release a solid Update."

Harry said developers should expect the two biggest areas of TFS focus in Update 2 to be in the realms of agile project management (and general work tracking) and the next increment of Git tooling. There will be other significant non-TFS-specific updates, as well, he said.

The Update 1 package for Visual Studio 2013 is downloadable immediately. More information on what's in Update 1 is available here.

Microsoft officials announced plans in September 2012 to make more updates to Visual Studio available on a regular basis. Microsoft subsequently released four updates to VS 2012.
