MT posts driving records on the Web

Not that most people want to be reminded of how many speeding tickets they have, but just in case you're curious, Montana now posts that information on the web, reports the Associated Press. Maybe it's not the first thing one would look at on the Internet, but knowing how you stand at the Department of Motor Vehicles can be a good thing.

A new program is in place that lets Montana drivers check their accident and ticket records on the Internet. And if you're so inclined, you will soon be able to research the ownership histories of used cars.

It is there "just to check your own record to see if a ticket got put on or didn't get put on," said Dean Roberts, division administrator. "There may be cases where you have gone to court on a speeding ticket and you might want to check to see if the judge sent it to us and put it on your record or not."

Employers, parents or private investigators can do background checks as well, if they have a valid reason. All that's needed is $7, a name, driver's license number and a Social Security number.

"This is a valuable service for buyers of used cars," Roberts said. "We believe it results in a more informed buyer, and it may protect the buyer from scams, like unknowingly buying a stolen vehicle."

Driving records are considered public documents.
