SINGAPORE, 27 July 2000 - Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Network for Electronic Transfers (NETS) and a group of business partners to strengthen its intelligent campus with smartcard technology and applications.

The Polytechnic, NETS and 11 solution providers will work together to transform the campus into an environment where smartcard usage becomes a way of life for students, lecturers, staff and visitors.

This will create a smartcard lifestyle in the campus with smartcards used for daily needs, ranging from identification and authorised access to offices, laboratories, lecture theatres and sports facilities to smartcard applications at the library, canteen, Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), smart lockers, self-service kiosks, integrated keyboards with smartcard readers, auto-parking system, fast food outlets, online CashCardÒ purchases and even a loyalty card programme.

New products and technologies like drink and newspaper vending machines, Internet pay-per-use application and CombiCard will be piloted in the campus.

Test-bed for smartcard services and technology
"The NYP project," said NETS Chief Executive Officer Wee Tew Lim, "will enable us to have a showcase of most, if not all, operational smartcard-based services that have been locally developed in Singapore. It will serve as a forum and environment for all business partners to jointly design and develop smartcard applications based on international standards and platforms.

The CombiCard technology, for instance, incorporates a single chip, but with two communication interfaces. Previously, two separtate chips served the different communication interfaces - one a contact interface, such as in payment through nets terminals (by inserting the card into a reader), and the other a contactless interface for access through doors, MRT gantries, etc (simply by flashing the card over the reader).

As a result, the CombiCard can combine ticketing, smart payment and sophisticated loyalty applications in the same chip. We are presently exploring with Nanyang Polytechnic the use of the CombiCard for applications in the campus."

The GemCombi card from Gemplus, which will be used in the campus, complies with International Standards prescribed by the International Standards Organisation (ISO). By adopting International Standards, NETS and the Polytechnic will be well placed to propagate new applications to other countries and also adopt applications developed overseas based on the same standards.

In addition, there are a number of intelligent features, which are already established in the campus including the Facility Reservation System. This system, linked to the Building Management System, allows automatic booking of facilities, and access control of lighting and air-conditioning system, upon booking of the facility.

The Intelligent Campus partnership with NETS and other business partners aims to extend present usage to establish a smartcard "lifestyle" environment within the campus.

The Intelligent Campus partnership, with almost 15,000-strong smartcard users, would allow for on-going development of CashCard applications as well as serve as an environment to prototype new smartcard applications/solutions. With
