New calculator compares large-format display energy use

Want to know how much energy you can save using one display or another. This simple tool helps.

One of the newer players in display technologies, Prysm, has come up with a calculator for assessing the environmental impact of various large format displays.

It's not most the sophisticated tool, but the Environmental Cost of Operation (ECO) calculator compares the energy consumption of formats such as LED, LED rear projection, LCD, plasma and so on with Prysm's Laser Phosphor Display (LPD) technology. Prysm claims that LPD technology offers 75 percent cost savings over other technologies, especially when it comes to energy consumption and the power needed to cool things down. Another bonus: The LPDs were manufactured with ease-of-disassembly and recycling in mind. The glass and phosphor can be recycled, and the products are free of mercury.
