News Burst: Net goes down for a day
A large part of the UK's Internet connection with the US was cut off yesterday due to a cable breakage.

Britain's largest computer network -- the Joint Academic Network (JANET) -- was one of those affected by the outage. JANET provides the Internet link for the UK's academic establishments. The Sanger Centre, an academic research institute was affected by the break-down. James Greenhalgh, IT assistant at the centre said: "We couldn't get to anything overseas. It meant that no one could get at our data."
Teleglobe which operates the damaged cable is due to issue a statement later today.
