One DevOps tool for all clouds: Cloudify

Who doesn't want one program to run multiple clouds? I know I do. Cloudify, an open-source orchestration software company, now claims it can support all the top five public clouds and Azure, OpenStack, and VMware, with its latest release, Cloudify 3.4.

Cloudify is doing this by using -- to no great surprise -- Google's Kubenetes. Cloudify 3.4 runs microservices on top of Kubernetes, alongside stateful services such as back-ends on bare-metal and virtual machines (VMs.) It also manages composition and dependency management between services, as well as triggering of auto-scaling of both the micro-services and Kubernetes minions.

The program is based on the Topology and Orchestration Specification for Cloud Applications (TOSCA) standard.

The platform offers support for hybrid stacks, orchestrating containers, and non-containerized stacks through new Kubernetes support. It now supports Amazon Web Services (AWS), Azure, Google Compute Platform (GCP), OpenStack, VMware, and cloud-native technologies like Kubernetes and Docker.

Cloudify's target audience are enterprises that want to use a single, open-source cloud orchestration program across multiple cloud architectures. Besides handling the clouds, Cloudify can also work with different DevOps programs such as Puppet, Chef, and Saltstack.

Here's the big, new features coming with this version.

● Enterprise-grade enhanced hybrid cloud support - Supports all major public and private cloud environments, including AWS, Azure, GCP, OpenStack, VMWare vSphere, and vCloud.

● Support for entire VMware cloud and virtualization stack.

Public shared images for both AWS and OpenStack - Prebaked Cloudify Manager environments now available for AWS through a shared Amazon Machine Images (AMI) and OpenStack through a QCOW image. This enables simple bootstrapping of a full-fledged Cloudify environment in minutes.

● Deployment update - Allows updating of application deployments, enabling application operations engineers and developers to introduce topology changes and include new resources to run TOSCA deployments.

● In-place manager upgrade - The new Cloudify Manager upgrade process provides fully automated in-place upgrades for all manager infrastructure without any downtime to the managed services; in-place upgrade will allow easy migration between Cloudify versions and application of patched versions.
