Over 1 billion App Store downloads, AppReview helps you sort the 32,000+ apps

Apple iPhone and iPod touch owners have now downloaded applications more than 1 billion times in the nine months that the App Store has been live. Anyway you slice it, that is a fantastic achievement. According to a well written TechCrunch article that works out to an average of about 27 apps per device. I personally have downloaded over a hundred different apps and some more than once so I probably account for at least a couple hundred downloads myself. There are still a few problems with the App Store and with something over 32,000 apps in the App Store it is a daunting task to find apps you need or want to try.

Clayton let me know about a very helpful website, AppReview, that is also available as an iPhone application (iTunes link). The AppReview folks have currently conducted hands-on evaluations of over 17,000 of the 32,000+ applications and offers one of the largest databases of user reviews. There are tabs for the Best, Better, and Good apps where each list can be sorted by name, price, and date. You can view apps on What's New, Categories, and Recommendations pages.

You can view application reviews by category and even see what applications have earned a thumbs-down rating. There are an overwhelming number of games currently in their database (6,837), followed by books (3,912) and then entertainment apps (3,324).

This site has proven to be helpful in sorting through the App Store and I look for continued refinement in iTunes to help users find apps that help them out.
