Palm Treo 680 gets a major firmware update, layoffs may be coming too

The Palm Treo 680 is the latest GSM Palm OS Treo and for those of you who own a Cingular branded model you will be happy to know there is a firmware update available that adds quite a bit of functionality to the device. You can visit the Palm Treo 680 update page for all the details and the download link. If you own an unlocked Treo 680 this update is not for your device, but there should be one coming soon.

This update includes the following new features, fixes, and changes:

  • Push to Talk
  • Microsoft Direct Push Technology
  • Instant Messaging client (AOL, Windows Live Messenger, and Yahoo! IM)
  • Easy access to additional services - (TeleNav GPS Navigator and MobiTV)
  • Power saving enhancements
  • Support for larger expansion cards (Up to 4 GB SDHC formatted cards)
  • Enhanced ringtone support
  • Cingular, now the new AT&T - Updated graphics reflect the new AT&T branding, including a new look for the Xpress Mail application.

This update also incorporates three previously released software updates: AT&T/Cingular Treo 680 Software update 1.09 (May 2007), Daylight Saving Time update (February 2007) and Treo 680 Camera update (January 2007).

In other Palm news, it looks like Palm may be laying off some employees as they continue to struggle in the mobile market. This is quite sad since Palm was the real leader in this market just a few years ago.
