After a financially compelling pilot test of LED lights, the Pentagon's renovation team has pledged to buy more than 4,200 LR24 recessed LED luminaires from green lighting manufacturer Cree.

The purchase is part of a project in the Wedge 5 section of the Pentagon building. The renovation team found that the Cree lights improved light quality while resulting in a 22 percent reduction in energy usage over traditional fixtures, according to Cree's announcement about the deal. The company goes on to say that the payback period for the Pentagon LEDs will come over about four years, considering maintenance savings, reduced load on HVAC systems and the elimination of hazardous waste disposal fees.
