Seagate Cheetah drive leaps to 10,000rpm

Storage giant Seagate Technology leapt drive speeds today with the Cheetah, the first hard drive to spin at 10,000rpm.

The 9.1Gb and 4.55Gb Cheetah drives achieve data transfer rates of up to 15Mb/sec with the combination of a faster spin-speed and support for the UltraSCSI and FC-AL (Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop) fast interfaces.

Seagate claimed the 15Mb/sec transfer rate was double that of a 7,200rpm drive. It will target the drive at companies using transaction and scientific processing systems, professional audio and video applications, and other systems requiring high-speed data throughput.

The drive will be available in the first quarter of 1997 and will be produced in quantity in the second quarter.
