Skype 5.0 for Windows has been freed from Beta and unleashed with a number of improvements and additions, namely with some help from Facebook.

Along with the usual revamped interface, you'll find a serious collaboration between Facebook's News Feed and the Skype phonebook. Skype users will be able to update their own Facebook status messages, comment and like items directly from the Skype application.

Then the Facebook Phonebook in Skype opens up texting and calling to Facebook contacts' mobile and landline numbers. (If you're both Skype users, naturally, that communication will be free.) All of this is thanks to a little thing called Facebook Connect, which is slowly taking over the Internet...and thus our lives.

The new version of Skype will also come with an automatic call recovery function to redial dropped calls and a free trial offer for video calling.

The old beta version is still available here if you'd like, but the new Windows app is ready to download for free. (Although it says version 4.2, you'll get 5.0.)
