Social Business News: Nov. 6, 2008

While the election has taken up most of the ink and Web space over the last couple of weeks, there's still been some steady movement in Social Business. Before I jump into this week's sampler I want to note two important changes -- this will now be a bi-weekly update and it will also now be known as Social Business versus Digital Web Business.

While the election has taken up most of the ink and Web space over the last couple of weeks, there's still been some steady movement in Social Business. Before I jump into this week's sampler I want to note two important changes -- this will now be a bi-weekly update and it will also now be known as Social Business versus Digital Web Business. That said, let's see what the social business cat dragged in over the last two weeks:

  • TopCoder opened a competitive software development community called TopCoder Direct, which provides on-demand access to developers from more than 200 countries. The participants compete to build Web infrastructure, mobile applications, database systems and creative solutions at a price point that a small business or enterprise company can set (think Elance.com for developers).
  • Caspio launched its new web marketing toolbox, which allows non-programmers to add Web marketing applications to their sites with the aid of programmers. The widgets provide lead generation and management capabilities, feedback, engagement, and information to customers and prospects who are interacting with a company site. The widgets can include page rating for interactive feedback and improvement of pages, double opt-in newsletter sign up and publishing for better connection with customers and prospects, page emailing for the viral distribution of popular site pages, contact form for management and routing of company contact and news announcements distributed to leads.
  • MrTed Ltd., creator of talent acquisition solutions, has announced the beta availability of SmartRecruiters, a free applicant tracking system (ATS) for corporate recruiters and hiring manager. Designed for businesses with as many as 2,500 employees, SmartRecruiters allows recruiters to tailor corporate career Web sites, front office and online application forms. Recruiters can edit job ads in real-time, rate candidates, screen candidates and track history of actions and interactions with candidates—all for free from within the application.
  • MindTouch, an open source software company, announced new company milestones and improvements in its flagship product, MindTouch Deki, a wiki-based collaboration platform for enterprise collaboration and mashups. The company has experienced at 368 percent increase in customers in the last 12 months, and through October of this year, a 612 percent increase in revenue over the previous year. Updates to MindTouch Deki include a new Microsoft Windows installer, a MediaWiki to Deki converter, and a Lotus Notes to Deki converter.
  • Yoono released an upgrade to its browser-based social aggregation sidebar that claims to monetize social aggregation. The sidebar now supports Internet Explorer and features imeem embeddable music widgets, full integration with MySpace as well as a Facebook upgrade. Yoono also released a shopping widget for social aggregation, which generates product recommendations and pricing comparisons based on the products displayed during a browsing session. Users can purchase items from Amazon.com, Buy.com, eBay and Shopzilla from the sidebar.
