Take heed: Report defines smart meter vulnerabilities

What are you up against in terms of smart meter risks? New report makes some educated guesses.
Written by Heather Clancy, Contributor

This is one of those reports you sort of wish people wouldn't write, because it gives the "bad" sorts and generally malicious people ideas that they might not have been smart enough to have themselves. But, in the interest of sounding a warning bell, there's a new report out from security firm InGuardians that outlines some of the potential security risks involved with smart meters. The report was commissioned by several utilities who are working on smart meter pilots; essentially InGuardians is a bit of an ethical hacker. Anyway the report suggests that the risks range from someone stealing your smart meter outright and reprogramming it on the sly, to someone hacking into the meter wirelessly and messing with your electricity supply.
