McNamara joins board as former CIO Philip Clarke steps up to CEO...

Tesco today announced that Mike McNamara has replaced Philip Clarke as CIO.

McNamara has worked at Tesco since 1999, first as CTO of Tesco.com and most recently as UK IT operations director. Before working at Tesco, McNamara worked for consultancy company Accenture for seven years.

Clarke leaves the position of CIO to become Tesco's new CEO, replacing Sir Terry Leahy in March.

Clarke oversaw several major changes to IT during his tenure as Tesco CIO, including the introduction of a new CRM system and the virtualisation of servers, which improved efficiency in Tesco's datacentres.

Tesco also began using telematics technology under Clarke's direction, which not only increased delivery rates but reduced fuel consumption.

McNamara is one of seven new individuals named today who have been appointed to Clarke's executive committee.
