"The Morning Briefing' is SmartPlanet's daily roundup of must-reads from the web. This morning we're reading about smart grid security, upgrades and outsourcing.

.) Smart Grid Operators: Upgrades not equaling better security. In 2009, American organizations received $2.5 billion to upgrade the nation's electric systems. However, a recent survey of 104 energy security practitioners indicated that many believe the smart grid modernization did not translate to improved security.

.) Mahindra Satyam to collaborate with Symantec on smart grid security. IT services provider Mahindra Satyam said it is enhancing its current relationship with security software maker Symantec Corp. to collaborate on security solutions for smart grid.

.) Smart-grid tech outpacing security, in 'delicate dance with risk'. Development and deployment of smart-grid technology such as intelligent electric meters has outpaced security, setting up a “delicate dance with risk,” said the head of the industry advisory group EnergySec.

.) Researchers work to make future smart grid safe and secure. Researchers working on a future power grid for the nation envision a network similar to the Internet. Under this scenario, users and utility companies interact to share and swap energy from distributed systems, much like computer users tap into the web to transfer files.

.) 6 smart grid projects you don’t see every day. How varied are smart grid projects around the world?
