Sling Media announces SlingPlayer for S60 devices

Sling Media announces SlingPlayer for S60 devices

I started using a Slingbox (now called the Slingbox Classic) a couple of years ago after Sling Media was kind enough to give each Mobius attendee a box to evaluate. I have to admit that the Slingbox actually resulted in me upgrading my TV setup to an HDTV with a DVR. I travel quite a bit for work and find the Slingbox and SlingPlayer Mobile clients valuable for keeping me updated with the latest shows that I follow. SlingPlayer kicked off their mobile clients with Windows Mobile Pocket PC and has since developed mobile clients for WM Smartphones and Palm OS devices. There has been a Symbian client on the 3 network, but it was locked to certain devices with the carrier. I am happy to say that Sling Media announced the general release of SlingPlayer for S60 devices.

The mobile web is much better than it was 10 years ago

The mobile web is much better than it was 10 years ago

For those of us who have been using mobile devices for 10 years or more we can recall the days when we had cables connected from our PDAs to our basic cell phones that connected us to the web through our ISP dial-up numbers. I used to surf with a Palm IIIx connected to a Qwest Kyocera phone at a blazing 14.4 kbps. IMHO, the mobile web has come a LONG way in 10 years and I have to agree with Russell Beattie in regards to a post that made TechMeme regarding the mobile web. I am actually quite satisfied with the 140 kbps EDGE speeds I see on T-Mobile and those on 3G get much better speeds than this. You used to have to search for mobile formatted sites, but now anyone who has any sense has a mobile formatted web page.

iPhone Dev Team issues statement in response to Apple

iPhone Dev Team issues statement in response to Apple

There were several posts (like the one from Jason) on Apple's statement posted yesterday regarding hacked iPhones. Everyone who hacked their iPhone, like I did, shouldn't be a bit surprised by this statement and if you are then you shouldn't have hacked your iPhone in the first place. Hacking the iPhone carries a known risk and I am sure Apple felt some pressure from AT&T to make such a statement. I personally am saving myself US$50/month by using my iPhone on T-Mobile and dropping AT&T, but I also made the decision before I hacked it that I can live with the iPhone the way it is now along with the 3rd party applications I have loaded on it. The iPhone Dev Team who enabled us to SIM unlock our iPhones issued a statement today in response to Apple's statement.

First look at the Nokia N95-3 with US 3G support

First look at the Nokia N95-3 with US 3G support

Darla Mack is one lucky woman and gets lots of opportunities to check out the latest and greatest Nokia S60 devices. This time she has the Nokia N95-3 device in her hands that has US 3G support (AT&T network), more RAM (about 80 MB vs 20 MB free on the N95) and a larger battery. Darla has a first look at the battery life (comparing non-3G devices) and the new battery appears to significantly increase the run time of the device. The faster data network will require more power and you may not see a huge difference in battery life if you are using the 3G network. While the 3G network support is nice (I won't see it on T-Mobile though), I am personally more excited about the much greater RAM and battery capacities.

Nokia enhances your text messaging experience with Conversation

Nokia enhances your text messaging experience with Conversation

I first ran into threaded SMS on my Palm Treo 650 and have to say that this feature set the standard for text messaging on mobile devices. For those of you who aren't familiar with threaded SMS, what happens is that text messages to and from particular contacts appear together on a single page like you were instant messaging with that person. The Apple iPhone also includes threaded text messaging and uses colors to differentiate who sent the SMS. Windows Mobile still hasn't caught on that this is a desired feature, but there are some hacks and 3rd party applications that can be installed. I just read on All About Symbian that Nokia's Beta Labs have introduced Conversations for S60 devices.

Steve Jobs confirms that a 3G iPhone will be coming in 2008

Steve Jobs confirms that a 3G iPhone will be coming in 2008

It is pretty obvious that Apple is working on future iPhone models and there has been lots of speculation that a 3G model would be released in Europe this year. However, as confirmed by the O2 UK iPhone announcement from earlier today the first European model will also be 2.5G (EDGE) just like the U.S. model. Upon further questioning at the UK announcement, Jobs did confirm that a 3G model will be released before the end of 2008. He also stated that the reason 3G was not included in the first iPhone was the battery drain users would experience with the 3G radio. Honestly, as much as 3G would be nice on the iPhone I agree with the compromise Apple made for the first edition, especially given the fact that the iPhone battery is non-removable. If they had used a removable battery then they could have included a 3G radio, like Windows Mobile and S60 devices.

Fujitsui U810 ultra-portable PC now available

Fujitsui U810 ultra-portable PC now available

I have been enjoying the mobile office functionality of the HTC Advantage (see my review) and am always on the lookout for other powerful mobile devices that can help me work where I want to be. One of the devices I have been keeping my eye on is the Fujitsu LifeBook U810 that looks a bit like a big brother to my old Sony CLIE UX 50. I just read on jkOnTheRun that the Fujitsu U810 is now up on the Fujitsu website and available for US$999 or US$1099. The only difference between the two is the version of Vista (Home vs. Business) and the inclusion of Microsoft Works or Office. Compared to other devices in this ultra-portable PC category these sound like very good prices and definitely have me interested.
