ANZ Bank CIO quits
Australia and New Zealand Banking Group chief information executive Anne Weatherston has announced her resignation this afternoon.
The bank said it will take on a global search to find a replacement. In the meantime, Weatherston's position will be assumed by group chief operating officer Alistair Currie effective immediately.
Commenting on Weatherston's time with the company, Currie noted that she was responsible for establishing a transformation technology roadmap that aligned to ANZ's regional strategy.
"This has seen ANZ strengthen technology infrastructure, introduce new customer channel including mobile goMoney and ANZ Transactive, deliver new global processing systems in payments, loans and markets, move to a single core banking platform in New Zealand, and develop a first class technology organisation to support our business," he said.
The tech transformation program, which was known as Banking on Australia, was a five-year, customer-facing strategy that initially kicked-off in early October 2012, and was expected to cost the business AU$1.5 billion.
During the company's half-year results for 2013, the bank had reported the transformation was aimed at reducing the size of its branches.
Despite these plans, Weatherston had previously showed signs of scepticism around cloud computing, stating in October 2011 that it wasn't so relevant for ANZ to be adopting it.
"Cloud is great for small and medium businesses, but I don't think it's completely relevant for large, complex banks at this point in time on a large scale," she said.
Currie, whose current role includes responsibility for technology and shared services, continued on to say: "We are now increasingly taking an integrated approach to the group's business transformation agenda across technology, shared services, and operations. This is delivering more capability and better value for customers while driving significant productivity gains."
Weatherston was appointed to the role in January 2010 where she replaced then-repositioned CIO Peter Dalton.
