18.1 million went online in 1996
Roughly 18.1 million people went online in 1996, according to Telecommunications Reports International's latest Information and Interactive Services Report.

The census covered both online services and the Internet and found that at a peak in the fourth quarter the sign-up rate was 33,000 a day. However, non-US markets will have to be a bigcontributor if the growth is to continue as the US is slowing up, the report concludes.
