Telecommunications giant BT is hiring 300 staff across the Asia Pacific, including Australia, for some 15 new professional services portfolios.

Staff will be recruited for its Perth, Sydney and Melbourne offices, although the company did not disclose how many of the hires will be sourced in Australia.

BT Asia Pacific managing director Kevin Taylor said the local teams will support large multinationals in Australia.

The telco will open new services portfolios to the region such as Internet Protocol services, managed security and unified communications over the next nine months.

Todd Handcock, BT Asia Pacific business operations vice president, said it is targeting local professional services investments into financial, logistics and pharmaceutical markets.

"About 80 per cent of our largest customers are investing significantly in the [Asia Pacific] region," Handcock said.

"It is seen as a base for front-end operations, no longer as just a base for low-cost manufacturing."

Staff will be recruited across India, China and Japan, as well as for a new bid response centre in Singapore.

BT has invested some US$100 million in Asia Pacific networks over the last three years. It describes Australia as the third largest networked IT market, with "sector leadership" in finance and banking markets.

The company employs some 5000 staff across 18 countries.

Darren Pauli travelled to BT's Hong Kong media conferences as a guest of the company.
