Comcast Xfinity demos 1Gbps cable connection, will show off next-generation set-top boxes, UI

Its partnership with Skype to bring video calls to its subscribers isn't the only iron Comcast has in the fire at this week's Cable Show. Tomorrow, the cable giant will detail what it's calling its "next generation television experience" for Xfinity TV customers, including a new set-top box and a revamped and more interactive UI.

The new boxes will be powered by an Intel system-on-a-chip and use tru2way and IP technology. Comcast claims the new interface will make it easier to search across all of the programming choices available to subscribers, featuring MyTV personalization that allows you to see your DVR recordings, favorite shows, and recommendations all together. There's also Facebook integration as well as traffic and weather apps included.

The new features are being tested in Augusta, GA, though no official roll-out has yet been announced. Perhaps Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian L. Roberts will provide that information during his demo tomorrow. He may also detail the new undefined faster broadband speeds the company is also promoting. Will it be the 1Gbps connection that PaidContent.org witnessed Roberts showing off last night?

During the demonstration, Roberts was able to download an entire season of 30 Rock -- conveniently part of the NBC stable that Comcast now owns -- in a mere minute and 40 seconds from a Comcast network 11 miles away. How long until 1Gbps becomes a real option for Xfinity subscribers? And how much more will you need to pony up for such incredible next-generation speeds?
