According to this report, the frontrunners for Malaysia's WiMax license are YTL e-Solutions, Green Packet and REDtone International--all relatively small companies.

It's interesting that none of the big telcos are deemed to be likely winners. WiMax costs a lot to roll out and the telcos would have the financial heft to do this.

Last year, the government awarded two additional 3G licenses to a couple of non-telcos, both of which have yet to roll out 3G services.

With Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak calling for Internet access for everyone, it's imperative that the WiMax initiative succeeds. Choosing the right companies to give the license to can make all the difference.
