Microsoft has dropped the word 'Series' from the name of its new mobile operating system, Windows Phone 7 Series.

In a tweet on Friday, the Windows Phone team wrote: "Tis the season for Series finales. We've got one too — dropping the 'Series' and keeping the 'Windows Phone 7.' Done."

The name of the mobile OS came in for some criticism when it was announced in February, largely because it would require a user to refer to their 'Windows Phone 7 series phone'.

Users will now be able to refer to their 'Windows Phone 7 phone'.
