Motorola sets out roadmap for Android ICS upgrades

Motorola has published its timetable for upgrading existing smartphones and tablets to Android 'Ice Cream Sandwich' 4.0.

The company, which is being bought by Google, set out the roadmap in a user forum post on Wednesday. Motorola specified rough upgrade periods for four devices in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), while listing others that Motorola is considering upgrading.

The Razr is the only Motorola smartphone with a listed upgrade period — ICS will arrive for this device sometime in the second quarter of the year, as it will for the Wi-Fi-only Xoom tablet.

The two versions of the Xoom 2 tablet will get the upgrade in the third quarter of 2012, Motorola said. An ICS upgrade for the Atrix smartphone is being planned, but no date has been announced yet — the same goes for the 3G version of the original Xoom.

The Motoluxe and business-focused Pro+ phones are listed as being in the "evaluation/planning" stage, so it is not yet clear whether they will get the upgrade at all.

All the other Motorola Android devices will stay on the versions they are already on. All of these are phones that are on versions of Android preceding the 'Gingerbread' version 3 release.
