Optus' answer in eliminating the need for costly deployment of new networking infrastructure is the EXPAN IP Storage, a fully managed, online data storage solution for IP users in the SME and large corporate sectors.

"This is ideal for companies with an IP infrastructure requiring a networked repository. Unlike traditional storage networked solutions which use proprietary technologies to transmit and receive data, Optus EXPAN IP Storage runs on ubiquitous and familiar IP networks, therefore minimal training of existing personnel is required to support it," says Optus business managing director Peter Kaliaropoulos.

Storage occurs in a highly secure, offsite environment allowing instantaneous online access to a company's data repository. The solution complements a long list of IP-based firsts for Optus, including Virtual Private Networks (VPNs), Multi Protocol Layer Switching networks, GPRS and satellite. Once the stored data was IP compatible, customers could run it over their Local Area Network (LAN) or Wide Area Network (WAN).

"For example, a business with 200-plus employees and national branches can significantly benefit financially following the deployment of Optus EXPAN IP storage as well as reaping the rewards from extra reliability, lower disk capacity utilisation, fewer points of storage management, and more efficient management of data," Kaliaropoulos said.

The Optus EXPAN IP Storage uses new Internet Small Computer Systems Interface (iSCSI) technology and will be available from April 2004.
