Telstra hits 14.4m mobile customers, 1.5m 4G devices

Australia's largest telecommunications provider Telstra has said it now has 14.4 million mobile customers, after adding 607,000 in the last six months of 2012.

Telstra's half-year results, released today, show that the company surpassed the 1 million mark in 4G sales, and has continued to win mobile customers in a relatively stagnant market, adding 607,000 in the last six months of 2012, bringing its customer base to 14.4 million.

CEO David Thodey told investors this morning that the company has added 3.8 million mobile customers since July 2010, and is investing AU$1.2 billion in its mobile network this year.

Telstra now has 1.5 million 4G customers, Thodey said, confirming a report by ZDNet in November last year that the company was close to passing the 1 million mark.

The company added 218,000 mobile broadband devices to give the company 3.3 million mobile broadband customers, including 790,000 tablet customers.

Fixed broadband continued to grow, adding 85,000 in the half, to bring the total to 2.7 million customers. Thodey said that Telstra now has 16,000 cloud customers, with 3,000 added in 2012.

Telstra has now sold 450,000 T-Boxes and 456,000 T-Hubs, with 2.4 million movies downloaded over the devices in the last six months.

In the second half of 2012, the company reported revenues of AU$12.5 billion, up 1 percent from AU$12.4 billion compared to the same half in 2011.

Net profit after tax was AU$1.6 billion, up 8.8 percent compared to the same half in 2011.

Telstra also began pulling in revenue from its AU$11 billion deal for the National Broadband Network (NBN), bringing in AU$176 million in the last six months of 2012, including AU$94 million in payments from the federal government, and AU$82 million in universal service obligation payments, and infrastructure leasing payments.

Thodey and chief financial officer Andy Penn will hold a press conference at 11am AEDST.
