Twitter may buy Tweetdeck, the company behind one of the microblogging service's most popular clients, according to the Wall Street Journal.

On Tuesday, the WSJ quoted unnamed sources as saying the deal being mulled over is worth $50m (£31m), and the companies are in the advanced stages of negotiations.

In March, Twitter told developers to stop developing new clients for the service. It is not clear whether existing independent clients will have their support pulled at some stage in the future.

Tweetdeck has clients for the desktop and Android, with iOS clients scheduled to come soon. The clients use Adobe AIR, and provide more functionality than that found in Twitter's basic web client.

Back in February, there were rumours of Tweetdeck being taken over by Ubermedia, the company that owns other popular Twitter clients such as Twidroyd and UberTwitter.
