Verizon said Monday it will buy content delivery network provider EdgeCast.

The telecom giant said it will merge EdgeCast's technology and network into its Verizon Digital Media Services unit.

EdgeCast has more than 6,000 customers.

The deal, which will close in early 2014, will make Verizon more of a competitor with Akamai. Verizon said EdgeCast will better enable it to offer content and site delivery services to media companies, retailers and enterprises.

TechCrunch initially reported the acquisition and said Verizon paid about $350 million.

Here's a look at the EdgeCast network regions. Verizon will likely expand that footprint.
