Virgin Mobile has announced that it has fixed the issue that saw users access other customers' voicemail when attempting to access their own.

Following a report from ZDNet's sister site CNET that customers dialling 212 for voicemail were instead being routed to others' voicemail messages or menus, or being directed to leave voicemail for someone else's mailbox, Virgin deactivated the service entirely.

"The issue with our voicemail service experienced by some customers earlier today is now resolved," a Virgin spokesperson told ZDNet.

"When we became aware of the issue, we deactivated our voicemail service whilst our team investigated, and reactivated this when we were confident the issue was resolved. We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience caused."

Virgin added that any customers still experiencing the problem should turn their handset off and on again.

"We take the privacy and security of our customers very seriously and all hands are on deck to investigate and resolve the issue," Virgin said earlier in the day.

In May, Virgin Mobile also experienced a brief outage affecting some customers.
