Hands-on review: HandStand for iPad 2

There are many new protective cases out there for the iPad 2 already, but the HandStand for iPad certainly adds a few extra features. Here's a hands-on look.

The Handstand features an integrated stand for optimal viewing and comfortable typing, either when standing or at a desk. When I first sampled the Handstand, I immediately thought this would be ideal for commercial uses, such as sales associates on the floor of a retail store, either for checking inventory or ringing up orders.

Outfitted with a rotating disk that spins 360 degrees, users can easily toggle between landscape and portrait views without having to remove the ipad. Don't worry, it really doesn't spin that fast. It does require the user to move it around.

That elastic material is a one-size-fits-all hand strap that allows the user to keep a firm grasp on the Handstand case (which is holding onto the iPad 2). Then the user has one free hand to work the touch screen. Thus, this isn't the ideal option for serious typing on the iPad unless you prop it up on the table with the integrated stand.

The Handstand features a durable and semi-flexible silicone case that truly does hold the iPad 2 in. I had difficulty just getting my iPad 2 into the case - so much so that I was afraid of scratching it. Fortunately, that didn't happen. But it would take a lot of wear and tear (a serious amount of use) for the grip of this silicone case to get even close to letting the iPad slip out.

It's so tightly-made and truly designed for the second-generation iPad that I can't imagine the first iPad fitting in this case. (If you want a case like this for the iPad 1, there is a Handstand case fitted for that model.)

Here's an example of just how secure the iPad 2 is inside the Handstand. You really can just wave your hands around with it and the iPad will remain secure. Just remember that this case doesn't protect from scratches on the display. It does prevent scratches on the back, namely where the Apple logo is, as there is a circular cloth material on the inside of the case (directly on the opposite side of where the handstrap is).

Obviously this Handstand case, made from 100% recycled plastic and resin, has been designed especially for the iPad 2 given the rear digital camera cut-out and space for the volume controls.

Naturally, there are also optimized cut-outs for the 30-pin connector and speakers.

All in all, this is a secure case that should keep the iPad 2 fairly well protected. Again, this is an ideal option for commericial/business purposes (or perhaps for anyone who likes to work standing up). Otherwise, the case is a bit bulky due to the handstrap and stand on the rear side, making it a less-portable or travel friendly option.

Priced at $49.95, the Handstand for iPad 2 is available in black, white and pink.
