The OpenSolaris June 2009 release is a major improvement over previous OpenSolaris builds. The new release includes SPARC support, network virtualization, improved Windows CIFS compatibility, "Time Slider" desktop snapshots, integrated multimedia codec support and media center, an improved package manager and broader hardware support.
The Totem video player included with OpenSolaris has auto-install capability for Fluendo licensed media codecs.
The Fluendo codecs are fully legal, but require purchasing to enable the support on OpenSolaris.
VirtualBox 2.2.4 for Solaris x86 supports hosting Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 VMs, as well as any number of Linux distributions. Full sound support and 3D acceleration is also supported.
Flash 10 playback is smooth and fully functional, but the plugin requires manual installation to /usr/lib/firefox/plugins
Even Hulu works perfectly.
The improved Package Manager provides an easy to use GUI for adding in additional software, such as OpenOffice 3.0
OpenOffice 3.0 on Solaris.
OpenSolaris includes the Evolution mail client, the Pidgin Instant Messenger as well as fully enabled Microsoft SMB networking out of the box.
