Photos: Hurricane Day 3--relief is on the way

The U.S. Coast Guard hoists a pregnant woman from her apartment in New Orleans. Rescue workers also evacuated 10 others from the building.

For Katrina, the American Red Cross launched the largest mobilization of resources in its history for a single natural disaster. More than 200 Red Cross shelters are being set up to to provide hot meals, bottled water and distribute other much-needed relief supplies, as seen in this shot, taken during the aftermath of Hurricane Dennis. The Red Cross is accepting donations on its Web site.

A year ago, the amphibious transport dock USS Shreveport was in a war zone. Now it's part of the U.S. Navy effort to provide relief from Katrina. Four ships will deliver six disaster-relief teams with amphibious construction equipment, medical personnel and supplies.
