'ZDNET Recommends': What exactly does it mean?

ZDNET's recommendations are based on many hours of testing, research, and comparison shopping. We gather data from the best available sources, including vendor and retailer listings as well as other relevant and independent reviews sites. And we pore over customer reviews to find out what matters to real people who already own and use the products and services we’re assessing.

When you click through from our site to a retailer and buy a product or service, we may earn affiliate commissions. This helps support our work, but does not affect what we cover or how, and it does not affect the price you pay. Neither ZDNET nor the author are compensated for these independent reviews. Indeed, we follow strict guidelines that ensure our editorial content is never influenced by advertisers.

ZDNET's editorial team writes on behalf of you, our reader. Our goal is to deliver the most accurate information and the most knowledgeable advice possible in order to help you make smarter buying decisions on tech gear and a wide array of products and services. Our editors thoroughly review and fact-check every article to ensure that our content meets the highest standards. If we have made an error or published misleading information, we will correct or clarify the article. If you see inaccuracies in our content, please report the mistake via this form.

D-Link DWL-1000AP

D-Link's product is an access point only, and not an Internet gateway. D-Link has a separate gateway product that can be used in conjunction with other networking products, including the DWL-1000AP to connect to the Internet. If you already have a broadband gateway, or some other method of sharing your Internet connection, buying a separate access point such as this one could save you money.

The DWL-1000AP is very compact at 12.4 x 4.2 x 13.7cm, not needing space for the extra connectors associated with a gateway. You're supplied with a wall-mounting bracket that can be bolted to the access point. The single antenna normally fits flush with the casing, protecting it from damage, but it does fold outward if you have the access point on a desk and you're having reception problems.

Since this is an access point only, there's little configuration to do. An access point management application is supplied, which can manage many units at the same time -- not something of great use in a home environment. You'll need to assign an IP address to the access point when you first install it -- this just needs you to read the MAC address off the label on the back and enter it into a dialogue box. Once you've done this you can administer the access point. For most people, this will just mean giving the wireless LAN a name.

The DWL-1000AP allows access control based on MAC address, so you can prevent unauthorised users from connecting to the access point. It also supports 64-bit WEP encryption which, although no defence against a determined and skilled attacker, prevents casual snooping or unauthorised access.

D-Link's products failed to distinguish themselves in our performance tests. In conjunction with the USB adapter, the throughput of 4.55Mbit/s was respectable, but still lagged slightly behind other products. With a PC Card client, this figure fell to an unimpressive 3.99Mbit/s.

The DWL-1000AP is available as a standalone product, or as part of two starter kits. These kits contain an access point and two adapters, either USB or PC Card.
