Next-generation chip in the offing for 2003...

AMD is looking to cash in on the server and mobile markets next year in the run up to the 2003 launch of its next-generation chip. Speaking at an analyst conference yesterday, AMD CEO Jerry Sanders said the company had successfully staked its place in the desktop market and would now focus on the server and mobile sectors. The company also plans to sell more of its chips through resellers rather than OEMs, and is looking to cut manufacturing costs. AMD's newest chip, Clawhammer - aimed at dual processor servers - is due out in the second half of 2002. Sanders said he expected AMD to return to return to profitability about the same time.
