Apple intends to make its users' operating system upgrades as painless as possible by scheduling regular updates. The scheme had also been in the blueprint for Copland, its aborted in-house attempt at a successor to System 7.
"Customers can migrate to Apple's next generation OS, Rhapsody, at their own speed," Apple said in a formal statement to clarify its OS plans. "Apple anticipates many customers will remain on Mac OS for a number of years and intends to continue to upgrade this track of the OS in regular semi-annual upgrades ... This move should allow customers to plan deployment of new operating system technology in advance."
