Australia won't escape the Lenovo job cuts announced today, according to a spokesperson for the computer manufacturer.

The company had announced that it intended to cut 2,500, in an announcement on the Hong Kong stock exchange today, as it faced a "material" loss for the three months to 31 December 2008.

"This impacts employees from every geography and every business unit," a Lenovo spokesperson said, although they specified no numbers, saying the company did not break down figures into regions.

When asked whether Lenovo was concerned that it might have to re-employ those laid off in the case of an upswing, the spokesperson said that the moves were geared towards making the company more efficient.

"The moves we are making are difficult but necessary," the spokesperson said. "Right now we're facing a set of business challenges which not only affect our company but industry around the globe."

The company would work with external agencies to try and find new positions for workers, the spokesperson said, but would not disclose how much the effort would cost.
