Dell to skip Win CE option

Dell won't be following arch-rival Compaq and others down the Windows CE road anytime soon.

"We won't be making a PDA or anything on Windows CE for the foreseeable future," said Dell portables group director of marketing Ben Bentzin today on a visit to the UK.

"I would describe it as a 'tweener'. It's not got complete PC functionality and it is too big on hardware resources. It really doesn't do too much in terms of PC functions: you can't send attachments by e-mail and with the spreadsheet you can only see like 20 cells. Also, some of the usability is suspect. Fonts appear at a different resolution on a palmtop so [software look and feel] doesn't look like a normal desktop."
