Information storage giant EMC has started up a business unit for developing and delivering rich media content, including video, audio and other non text-based information.

The division will see several existing EMC groups, including its internet, media and service provider units, unite to provide information storage services for the infrastructure and service provider markets. The Massachusetts-based firm quoted a recent University of California report as the rationale for the consolidated division. The article predicts that the amount of information generated in the next two years will be more than all the information accumulated in the entire history of mankind. Former Lucent executive Bill Nelson will head up the division as senior vice president.
