Gartner: Server sales uptick will exacerbate data center power issues

Much of the action around data center and power management has been happening in a market where server hardware sales were shrinking not increase. Now that the market is beginning to turn, what odes that mean for power, cooling and space issues?

A new $195 report from Gartnersuggests these problems will be exacerbated in a growing market, which means more discipline for IT managers when they begin to sign purchase orders. Gartner suggests several ways to nip potential cooling capacity problems in the bud. They include:

• Collecting accurate and thorough capacity information for new hardware, in order to evaluate the associated impact on space, power and cooling
• Requiring energy-monitoring tools on all new servers
• Accelerating consolidation and virtualization
• Considering whether that new server is REALLY necessary
