Greening your datacenter, what's it worth?

Gartner joins the chorus of tech watchers calling for greener data centers. Like the folks at Sun that Heather blogged, Gartner calls for managing the process through graualism. Don't rip it all out and start over. That'll take a lot of energy, of all kinds.

Gartner's analysis found that PCs still use more energy AND Account for more carbon emissions than data centers. But data center energy use and emissions are rising much faster. What's happening? Here's what ZDnet UK reported about Gartner's findings "The main reasons for the scale of current emissions are a lack of floor space, a failure to house high-density servers and increased power consumption and heat generation."

Gartner found a lot of future help and hope for the IT manager wanting to curb energy costs and carbon emissions. Virtualization, web mashups, IP telephony are among the trends they list as positive in stopping the growth of energy use by data centers.

As Heather reported earlier this week, there's going to be a lot more information readily available on the greening of IT.
