Halifax and BT announce WAP banking

In the latest WAP deal, BT Cellnet users will be able to carry out handset-based transactions
Written by Justin Pearse, Contributor

On Wednesday, Halifax announced a partnership with BT Cellnet to provide a full range of banking services over mobile phones by the summer.

The first services will be via SMS and WAP, with GPRS services rolling out in autumn as Cellnet upgrades its network.

Customers will be able to view balances and transactions, transfer funds and pay bills over mobile networks.

The new mobile services follow the company's recent announcement of its online banking service, which is launching later this year.

Woolwich became the first UK bank to offer WAP banking services, this month, going live with a group of 100 customers. The full service will roll out in April.
