Huawei admits P10 models are equipped with different types of flash memory

Huawei said its latest flagship P10 models come with both eMMC and UFS flash memory after some owners in China tested their handsets and found different read and write speeds.

Huawei's P10 models are equipped with two types of flash memories due to the severe stock-out of flash memories from supply chains, Yu Chengdong, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, said in his official Weibo account, according to a Sina news report on Wednesday.

As Huawei's flash memory inventory is also out of stock, the company has been trying to optimize the design of software and hardware to guarantee a solid performance even if a handset is equipped with eMMC storage, Yu said in the statement.

Earlier tests from Chinese consumers showed that the read and write speeds of different P10 models may vary significantly, which sparked speculation that the company equipped the new flagship smartphone models with both eMMC 5.1, UFS 2.0, and UFS 2.1 storage.

Speeds of UFS 2.1 storage could hit 700 Mbps, while UFS 2.0 and eMMC 5.1 storage generally had test results of around 500 Mbps and 300 Mbps.

Huawei later said in an official statement that there had been no commitment to the use of only one specific flash memory.

"To meet global demand of millions of units, Huawei has employed the standard industry practice of sourcing solutions from multiple trusted suppliers to ensure a balance between user experience, quality, and sustainable supply.

"Relying on a single component supply can lead to a shortage, meaning delays for consumers who wish to buy our new products. In the case of flash memory, in this instance, Huawei has chosen multiple simultaneous mainstream solution suppliers."

Huawei had previously released a statement on Tuesday to respond the row, saying that the smooth experience of a smartphone is not simply determined by a single component.

Yu had said the recent controversy over P10 flash memory issue was due to the jealousy of some competitors who tried to discredit Huawei and mislead consumers.

All the Huawei Mate 9 models are equipped with UFS storage, Yu added.

The Chinese company announced its new flagships -- the P10 and P10 Plus -- at the MWC in Barcelona in February. Both feature dual camera setups certified by Leica.
