Amid the launch of its server chips, Intel dropped in a high-performance i7 processor for gamers and the overclocking crowd.

The Intel Core i7-980X Processor Extreme Edition is the first 32 nanometer, six-core processor with 12 computing threads for the desktop.

According to the chip giant, the target market for this souped up processor is digital content creation, 3D rendering and hardcore gaming. The chip is compatible with most Intel motherboards.

The chip runs at 3.33 GHz and is overclocking enabled. The Intel Core i7-980X is priced at $999 in 1,000- unit quantities.
