The iOS 9 update is out, and it's already causing headaches for some iPhone and iPad users.

I'm getting widespread reports from iPhone and iPad users of problems being encountered when downloading the newly minted iOS 9 update. Instead of the software delights promised to them by Tim Cook and the rest of the Cupertino gang, they're getting an ambiguous error message: "Software Update Failed. An error occurred downloading iOS 9."

Right now it's unclear what's behind this problem. However my guess is that it has something to do with the update servers being slammed.

This issue seems to only be affecting users trying to update devices over-the-air (OTA). Users carrying out the upgrade using iTunes don't appear to be affected.

Interestingly enough, this error message isn't new. Some on the iOS 9 public beta were also hit by it, and there was no real idea what was behind that either.

My advice: Keep trying, or maybe take this as an omen and give iOS 9 a little more time to mature.
