iPhone Quickoffice 1.1.1 update available, was the product released too early?
Version 1.1.1 includes the following:
- Ability to email remote or local files without having to download them.
- Mount device as a wireless drive via WiFi (see update below).
- Drag and drop files between your device and computer via WiFi (see update below).
- Fixed shift acting as caps-lock defect.
I am not seeing the WiFi Desktop Connection on my iPhone and still cannot figure out how to mount my iPhone as a wireless drive. The WiFi Desktop Connection part of the program has been made automatic so it no longer appears when you launch Quickoffice. You simply enter the URL that appears at the bottom of the "home" page in Quickoffice in your browser (with both your iPhone and computer connected to the same WiFi network) to access the iPhone and transfer files back and forth. I actually tested this at my secure network at work and it worked just as well as it did at home.
I read through the manual and FAQs without success in finding specifics on this capability. the ability to mount my iPhone as a drive. If you can get this and the drag/drop files working, please do let me know what I am missing here. It turns out the answer lies in the FAQ section for Quickoffice Files where they provide specific details for Mac OS X and Windows XP. It isn't as simple as using your web browser though, but after the initial setup it may be more convenient for some.
The ability to email the files FROM the device out works well and the caps-lock defect is now fixed.
One MAJOR issue still not fixed is the lack of Apple's predictive text input in the keyboard found in Quickword. I still don't see Quickword available as a stand-alone application and think Quickoffice needs to get the predictive text keyboard fixed before releasing this as a stand-alone app. The predictive text keyboard does work in text fields in Quicksheet (in portrait orientation). However you cannot cut, copy, or paste cells in Quicksheet so there is no solution for taking advantage of the Apple predictive keyboard capability.
As I tried to use Quicksheet more this past week I am also finding a few limitations that drive me crazy for how I use spreadsheets. You cannot copy and paste cells or select a cell and fill down. This means you need to physically enter the cell formulas and contents for each and every cell and this is just not an efficient way to work with a spreadsheet. Actually, the more I use Quickoffice the more I find lacking in it and think it should have had more work done before its release. It isn't always best to be the first.
These updates are nice, but still shows the product has a ways to go to be as good as Quickoffice on other platforms. Also, the longer Quickoffice takes to get a complete product up and running the more opportunity exists for companies like DataViz to get their Documents To Go iPhone product out and lead in Office document support on the iPhone with a fully functional product.
