PSA: TalkBack will be unavailable Sunday, July 22

On Sunday, July 22 -- this weekend! -- you won't be able to log in, comment, or change newsletter preferences. Here's why.

Heads up, SmartPlaneteers:

You will not be able to log in or leave a comment on SmartPlanet on Sunday. You won't be able to change your newsletter preferences, either.

(By the way, did you know we have two newsletters, a daily and a weekly? They're quite wonderful.)

The reason: we're moving our newsletter systems from servers in San Francisco to servers in Phoenix. (Turns out we couldn't fit everything in the first moving truck.) Because the newsletter system is hooked into your user accounts -- that's how we know where to send them! -- we have to disable it all to make the switch.

The website will still be live, and you will be able to read everything without issue, but you won't be able to comment. (Internally, we call it "maintenance mode.") The outage will last most of Sunday, from 11 a.m. ET to 7 p.m. ET. We don't anticipate any impact on any newsletter sends scheduled for Monday.

Again, we apologize for the inconvenience; we're trying to get all our technical ducks in a row.

Any questions? Just holler -- publicly, in the comments below (until the outage, of course!), or privately, via the contact link in my bio.

P.S. We've received several reports about odd special characters popping up all over the place in articles this week. It's not the author's fault; it's a leftover encoding problem from our July 10 database migration. As of this morning, it should be rectified, but if you spot anything odd, drop us a line.
