Salesforce.com on Friday said it has hired a 20-year IBM veteran to target large enterprise accounts.

The company appointed Jeff Lautenbach as senior vice president of enterprise commercial sales.

Normally, these hires wouldn't warrant much attention. However, the hiring of Lautenbach illustrates how Salesforce.com has evolved from a company that grew up by targeting line of business managers to one that increasingly faces off with the likes of SAP and Oracle.

Lautenbach's job will be to bring Salesforce.com and its cloud platform to large enterprises. At IBM, Lautenbach's most recent gig was heading IBM's software sales effort in the West. Lautenbach will report Hilarie Koplow-McAdams, executive vice president of sales at Salesforce.
