Sun makes additions to Java platform

Sun is expected to announce some additions to its Java technology range next week. The company is set to release new Java APIs and an electronic commerce offering. The Java Electronic Commerce Framework will form the basis of point-of-sale devices aimed at retail vendors.

The framework allows developers to better integrate databases and payment modules and offers an infrastructure for them to build on. The framework includes the database, payment and service components and all necessary administrative interfaces.

The new architecture also supports the Secure Electronic Transactions protocol for credit-card transactions, as well as including support for smart cards.
